Nuevo Vallarta or Guadalajara: choosing where to go

People tend to choose a destination before they have thought about what the trip actually involves. Since much of a medical trip is the time around the appointment rather than the appointment itself, it is worth choosing on that basis. Here is how the two settings differ in practice.

Nuevo Vallarta: quiet, flat, and close to the water

Nuevo Vallarta is a planned resort area on Banderas Bay, just north of the Jalisco state line, roughly twenty to thirty minutes from Puerto Vallarta International Airport. It is low-rise, largely walkable in parts, and built around a marina.

The practical advantage is that doing very little is easy here and does not feel like a wasted trip. If your schedule includes recovery days, a place where the default activity is sitting near water is worth something. Accommodation skews toward resorts and condominium rentals, many with kitchens, which matters more than people expect when you would rather not eat out for every meal.

Guadalajara: a working city with everything in it

Guadalajara is Mexico's second city and the capital of Jalisco, roughly thirty to forty-five minutes from its international airport to the central districts. Most visitors base themselves west of the historic centre, in the Providencia, Chapultepec, or Zapopan areas, which are quieter and greener than the old town and closer to most private medical facilities.

The advantage is everything being nearby: restaurants that serve properly late, pharmacies, services, and plenty to do when you feel like doing something. One practical note that catches people out: the city sits at around 1,560 metres, and if you arrive from sea level you may find the first day tires you faster than expected. Worth accounting for when you plan arrival relative to an appointment.

Which suits which traveler

The honest heuristic is to ask what you want to do on the days you are not at an appointment.

  • Choose Nuevo Vallarta if rest is the point, you want a short quiet trip, or you are travelling with someone who would enjoy a beach while you recover.
  • Choose Guadalajara if the idea of a resort makes you restless, you want a city around you, or you would rather be near a wide range of services.
  • Note that not every area of care is offered in both cities. Beauty and aesthetic care is offered in Guadalajara only.
  • If you genuinely cannot decide, say so on the enquiry form. The clinic and physician availability for what you are asking about often settles it anyway.

Things that apply to both

Book flexible flights and leave a buffer after your appointment rather than a tight turnaround. Whether spa treatments, swimming, or excursions are appropriate during recovery is a question for your physician, not for a hotel or for us, and the answer depends on what you had done and when.

Bring dietary requirements to your coordinator before travelling rather than on arrival, and save key contacts offline: clinic, coordinator, hotel, emergency contact, and the nearest hospital to where you are staying.

Common questions

Which city is better for medical travel?

Neither is better in general. Nuevo Vallarta suits a restful trip near the Pacific, Guadalajara suits people who prefer a city with everything nearby. Note that beauty and aesthetic care is offered in Guadalajara only.
